Empower Your Veterinary Nurse Team to Scan!

Imagine a nurse who spots a patient going downhill, picks up the probe with confidence and gives the vet useful information within minutes.

That's the picture behind my newest launch: RVN Ultrasound Training Days, 2-hour hands-on sessions on Abdomen OR Thorax POCUS, booked at a time that suits your practice.

Why focus on nurses?

In most first-opinion practices, the RVn is the first clinical pair of eyes on a sick patient. They notice the change in breathing, the pale gums, the patient who just isn't right.

Add structured point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skills, working within scope and under veterinary direction, and that first look can come with early, actionable information. The benefits show up across the team:

  • Faster decisions. The vet walks in with a clearer picture.

  • Better teamwork. Everyone knows the plan and who is doing what.

  • Time saved. Less waiting, less duplication, quicker answers for patients and owners.

  • Nurses practising to the level they're qualified for. It's more rewarding for them and better for the practice.

  • Life-saving decisions. In the collapsed, breathless or deteriorating patient, minutes matter.

What are the sessions?

Each session is 2 hours and focuses on one area:

Abdomen POCUS. A focused, repeatable approach, such as looking for free fluid in the collapsed or painful patient and getting comfortable with the key structures.

Thorax POCUS. A practical approach to the breathless patient, learning to recognise the signs that help the team act quickly.

Your practice. Your machine. Your mentor by your side.

This is what makes SkillVetScan different. I come to you.

Ultrasound is a practical skill that's hard to learn from books or online alone. Even many hands-on courses mean sharing a machine with strangers and limited patients. In your practice you get:

  • Your own ultrasound machine, so you finally learn your buttons and settings

  • Your own surroundings, with no travel and no distractions

  • Your own team, learning together and building confidence side by side

  • Your own cases where possible, so the learning sticks on Monday morning

One attendee said: "Everyone got involved and left finally understanding the machine and being able to use it effectively in patients."  Another told me: "Better than I expected!" Feedback like that is what I aim for with every session.

Learning that's practical, supportive and fun

My teaching is built on over two decades of clinical experience and my time leading diagnostic imaging provision at Harper & Keele Veterinary School, where I worked with vets, nurses and students from first principles through to clinical application.

That experience shapes how I teach. I focus on the how: where to put the probe, what you should see, and what to do if it doesn't look right. The jargon comes later, once the confidence is there. I also use interactive and VR learning where it helps, so you can practise before you scan a live patient. It's a relaxed room where questions are always welcome.

Keep learning with Veterinary Scan-S-Kool

A training day shouldn't be a one-off. Our online community, Veterinary Scan-S-Kool, gives you recorded CPD and advice on your own cases, so you keep building skills after the session:

  • Nurses: $59 per year

  • Vets: $139 per year

  • Practice membership (up to 5 staff): $669 per year

(Peripatetic support in your practice is also available as an add-on for teams who want ongoing, hands-on guidance.)

Ready to book?

Pick a day and time that works for your team, and choose Abdomen or Thorax. Your whole team can then learn, practise and put it to work in the patients who need it.

👉 [Book your RVN session] or [Get in Touch] and tell me what your team would like to achieve.

I'd love to help your nurses take the lead. 💗
